Bernardo's Wait
“Bernardo’s Wait” aims to be part of the absurd, a humanist, accessible, entertaining and aesthetic film that pays homage to a great writer and a dazzling era.
This synopsis explores the film project "Bernardo's Waiting", inspired by Fernando Pessoa's heteronyms and his work "The Book of Disquiet". Starting from the premise of a wait at a train station, evoking Beckett's absurdity in "Waiting for Godot", an interaction is proposed between four key characters: Bernardo Soares, Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis and Álvaro de Campos. Each one seeks to star in a story while waiting for Bernardo to get on the train.
The narrative moves away from traditional linearity, drawing on surrealist and dadaist influences to reflect a suspended temporality. The minimalism of the staging is reinforced by a setting in the Salar de Uyuni, where infinite reflections symbolise a timeless space. The visual aesthetic, inspired by artists such as Dalí and Buñuel, combines dreamlike and realistic elements in a play of light and shadow.
The film also incorporates references to the experimental cinema of Michel Gondry and Terry Gilliam, using classic techniques such as projections on glass to recreate surreal spaces. Sound, with echoes of Pierre Boulez’s musique concrète, plays a crucial role, transforming a desert train station into an immersive soundscape. The editing respects the acting rhythms and alternates between dream and reality, creating a unique visual and auditory experience that explores the human essence through absurdity.
